Broken in less than a year I bought this as a present for my uncle at christmas. After sitting in his car emergency bag in the trunk of his car for less than a year the crank no longer functions. The plastic gears inside are stripped. September 15, 2012
emergencies hello, Just nice to know if you dont have any contact with anyone with this product you probly would. May 2, 2012
Worked for one year! I was checking my emergency stuff when I found out that the windup flashlight wouldn't work anymore. We bought it two years ago. Both my husband and I tried separate times to wind it up. We are sure it doesn't work because we wound it up for over a minute. Nothing on it works: the LEDs, radio, or siren. It was stored in a cool, dry place, and children didn't play with it. I know it did work for one year because I used it when there was a tornado in the area. I am so disappointed. I bought one of these for my in-laws, parents, grandparents, and for work. I don't know if the one at work is still good. March 4, 2012
Every Home Needs at Least One When you live at the beach like I do then this is a necessary thing to have on hand. We get lots of storms and hurricanes that knock out your power for long periods of time. This flashlight will always light - you just crank the handle a few times ever so often so if your power is out for days then you can always have light. December 16, 2011
Power out This is a great product for power outages and the kids love to play with it, very durable December 15, 2011

Answer:
Great question! The purpose of those 2 holes is to provide an air venting mechanism for the battery (and circuitry). The battery sits directly beneath them.
