Materials You Will Need:

  • Energizer® Power Pack
  • Masking tape
  • Bulb holder or alternate insulated bulb holder
  • 2 pieces of bare copper wire—30" and 10" long
  • 3 pieces of number 22 insulated copper wire 10" long with approximately 1" of insulation stripped off all ends
  • Lid from shoe box

Please Read Carefully!

All experiments use safe, low-voltage battery power. Household electrical current contains high voltage that could cause serious injury. DO NOT use household electrical current for any of these experiments. ALL experiments should be conducted under adult supervision.

  • Carefully follow wiring instructions for each experiment. Improper wiring can result in battery leakage and/or rupture.
  • DO NOT take a battery apart. Contact with internal battery material can cause injury.
  • DO NOT dispose in fire, recharge, put in backwards, or mix with used or other battery types. This may cause batteries to explode, leak and cause personal injury.

Steps to Make a Steady Hand Game:

  1. Make a loop in the 10" bare piece of wire (wand). Bend 30" wire in curly line.
  2. Put curly wire through wand. Place ends through holes in box lid.
  3. Bend over wire end and tape inside lid.
  4. Connect an insulated 10" wire to the other end of the 30" bare wire under lid.
  5. Connect insulated wire from bulb holder to end of wand.
  6. Connect wire from shoebox lid to positive (+) lead of your Energizer® Power Pack. Connect other wire from bulb holder to negative (-) lead of your Energizer® Power Pack.
  7. Try to pass the loop all the way over the curly wire without lighting the bulb.

When the wand touches the wire, the circuit is complete and the bulb lights. As your skill increases, put more bends in the curly wire.
