• If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll - until the fire is extinguished
  • Get out of the burning structure
  • Check closed doors for heat before you open them: use the back of your hand to feel the top of the door, the doorknob, and the crack between the door and door frame before you open it
    • If the door is hot, do not open it; exit through a window
    • If the door is cool, open slowly to ensure the escape route is not blocked
      • If the route is blocked, shut the door and use an alternate escape like a window
      • If the route is not blocked, leave immediately and close the door behind you
  • If you cannot escape, hang a light-colored sheet out of a window to alert fire fighters to your presence
  • Crawl low under smoke; heavy smoke and poisonous gases collect first along the ceiling
  • Close doors behind you as you escape to delay the spread of the fire
  • Once you are safely out, call 9-1-1
