Safety Quiz
Listen to the NOAA Weather Radio, broadcast radio or television for information
Conserve fuel, if necessary, by keeping your residence cooler than normal
Temporarily close off heat to some rooms
To keep pipes from freezing, wrap them in insulation or layers of old newspapers and cover with plastic to keep out moisture
Let faucets drip a little to avoid freezing
If the pipes freeze, remove any insulation or layers of newspapers and wrap pipes in rags; open all faucets and pour hot water over the pipes, starting where they were most exposed to the cold
Use safe heat like fireplaces and portable heaters
Maintain ventilation when using kerosene heaters to avoid build-up of toxic fumes
Refuel kerosene heaters outside and keep them at least three feet from flammable objects
Change wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat; wet clothing loses all of its insulating value and transmits heat rapidly
Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia, if symptoms are detected, get medical help immediately
If you become stranded in your vehicle, call for help and stay inside your car until help comes to you
Run your engine for short periods of time to stay warm
Make sure your exhaust pipe is clear of snow
Affix a bright piece of clothing to the outside of your car so you are visible to rescuers; at night, turn on the dome light while running the engine to signal rescuers
